>One Island, One Dream< in Nightmarket

Night Market Workshop focuses on the social context of the Taiwanese night market. It attempts to respond to it by organising creative activities since summer 2006 and participation is not limited to artist student but it opens up the participation to students from all kind of different disciplines as computing science, design, architecture, etc. The theme of this year is on Street Experience, which means that all the projects are presented and played in the night market with the intention to interact with people.

The Group lead by Paris-based artist Yi-Hua WU (TW) and New York-based artist Alyssa Wright (USA), has presented an open participative performance – < One Island, One Dream > on 16th August 2008, at 20h, at Garden Night Market in Tainan city, Taiwan.

NightMarket as a form of grassroots local economy, becomes a specific nomad ‘fooding’ * culture in Taiwan. Beyond the pleasure of the greediness’s pleasure, the Night market could also be considered as the most basic classe’s public realm, as a constellation of social, political or economic conditions in the Taiwanese social context. It could offer the critical dynamism to be a stage as a figment of the social imagination, also as a space of contemporary artistic production in the present and in a specific site place, but outside institutional or conventional art or of museum spaces.

Le fooding as entertainment? It may be more!
Let 『fooding』 become Politic.

In this open participative performance < One Island, One Dream >, the political approach is the same as ‘the political’ meaning which is based on the Athenian horizontal democracy in “Greek republicanism”—Power should be shared equally among citizens. Sovereignty is exercised directly by the citizens themselves, the civic participation, a system in which a substantial part of active citizenship is the public realm. This is a political notion which is responsive to humanistic life experience. That should be distinguished from ‘modern’, ‘liberal’, ‘representative’, or ‘parliamentary’ democracy.

In the issues of this participative form as a democracy of art, it would be connected with this aesthetic of interaction, which doesn’t mean just to put the subject into an isolated process, using the machine’s mechanism. Here, the communitarian mutuality which has been produced by the collective collaboration and people’s active participation, is < One Island, One Dream >’s the basic start point of the political project.

『One Island, One Dream_

The Blind and The myth of Nationalism

The fever of Taiwanese nationalism always follows the Olympics and elections. It is manipulated by kind of micro-fascism consciously or unconsciously in daily life by political activities and media, with the form of festival, trend, and sport events on this island. All social organizations have “power fields” which blind everybody together. Individuals who participate in these social systems are influenced by repetitive knowledge and daily actions that in turn influence behaviour. At the centre of every system there is a point, “a blind spot” from which the “system’s organization is invisible, naturalized, normal.

One Island, One Dream used this background of nationalism to reveal this phenomenon of collective enthusiasm and it goes to the wrong place where is not very political correct social space, without any political incline. Just ridiculously consumed over and over by the performance of singing national anthem to make an irony of nationalism.

‘Do you Love Taiwan? Just in walking and singing the Taiwanese national anthem with us in the night market!

* Le fooding _ An English-derived French term is usually said to be a combination of English food and feeling. ‘Fooding’ also could be a verb describing the act of getting, making, and eating. A restauranting trend which emphasizes food as a style choice, usually via new or fusion cuisines in combination with factors not related to food, such as a unique or trendy atmosphere.
