The communicability of experience

Walter Benjamin, “Der Erzähler” (The Storyteller)

The storyteller does not try to convey dry, impersonal information; he sinks the story into his own life, in order to bring it out of him again. Story-telling itself is not a liberal art, but a craft. The great story is therefore a carefully crafted thing, the “precious product of a long chain of causes similar to one another”.

Finally, Virginia Woolf’s « The waves » has a traditional chinese (Taiwan’s) version. A young director of contemporary theatre, Wei, Ying-chuan wrote an article to recommend this book. She thought that this novel could be played like in a poly-monologue way in the theater’s stage. There could be 6 characters who sit on the stage without any action but only talking in turn. A world of <talking> on the stage! Ja! I think of Marc Liebens’ « Les 7 contre Thèbes » at T. Grütli and my mobile installation « Je m’échappe tous les jours » ! héhé…
